"The FIVER" 5-year vertical of PELLA Cabernet Sauvignon ('03-'07) - SOLD OUT

"The FIVER" 5-year vertical of PELLA Cabernet Sauvignon ('03-'07) - SOLD OUT

$555.00

A peak experience for any lover of Cabernet Sauvignon is opening all 5 bottles at one sitting for a vertical tasting, preferably with appreciative friends. We start with the 2003 and work our way through to the 2007, comparing and contrasting the bottles, each of which we consider to be paradigmatic of the vintage. We generally don’t decant the wine, though some people prefer to do so. The wines will open and evolve over the course of many hours, sometimes even improving the next day. Of course, cellaring the vertical and enjoying the bottles singly is always an option, but we highly recommend the novel educational experience of a vertical tasting!

100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Star Vineyard, Rutherford, Napa Valley. 100% French Oak. Unfiltered, unfined.

750 ml. ALC 14.5%.

A note on corks and decanting in older wines:  We recommend using a dual-pronged Ah-So opener to gently, patiently finesse the cork. Gentleness is key, and individual corks vary, some prone to crumbling, others firm and easy to extract. If a cork crumbles or is pushed into the wine bottle, as sometimes occurs, we recommend decanting with a sieve. Decanting will only enhance the nuanced flavors of a mature wine.

Kristof Nils Anderson, the former Lewis winemaker and founding winemaker at Gargiulo Vineyards in Oakville and Scribe in Sonoma, is known for making tannins “dance” on the palate in his terroir distinctive wines. His wines have extended aging potential and the proven ability to evolve magically in the cellar. Pella represents the epitome of his remarkable talent and artistry in crafting age-worth wines of the highest caliber.

The Star Vineyard in Rutherford is farmed by one of Napa Valley’s greatest viticulturists, David Abreu, producing sultry Cabernet Sauvignon fruit of admirable quality. This vineyard, ideally situated on a sweet spot of the Rutherford Bench, is the next vineyard to the South of BV’s #10 Vineyard and adjacent to BV#1, which goes into BV’s flagship Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Optimally cellared, the 2007 vintage is at a pinnacle of drinkability with its decade-plus of bottle-age that worked some real magic in that time.

The Cabernet Sauvignons from Pella contain Rutherford fruit from the Star Vineyard and are a glimpse into a rare time-capsule from the mid-2000s. Unfortunately, winemaker Kristof Anderson only produced a handful of vintages. Still, those he created are a spectacular example of what perfectly-aged, high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon can become over time. The 2007 vintage begins with a nose including concentrated black cherry juice, ground espresso, dried sage, dark chocolate, crushed granite, iron, and elegant florals. A very concentrated, compact palate follows, with penetrating red fruits and deep, supple black fruits that combine black tea, blackberries, and red currants, along with an immense amount of complexity. The complex flavors and aromas form waves of intensity that wash over your palate, then recede, evolving in a way that few wines do. The finish is unexpectedly long and ultimately satisfying, with poise, elegance, grace, and intensity that leave you wanting more and more.
